Sorry, due to various software and server changes, I had to completely rebuild this website.
Except for a few small 'blemishes', I was successful.
However, the English language version is not yet fully translated. For that I ask for a little patience.

Venlo - Verdun

ca. 02.06.2023 - 16.06.2023

415 Kilometre

 62 Locks

 80 Engine hours

We start in Venlo in the harbour of WSV de Maas.
Venlo is easily accessible from Germany via the A40 and A61 motorways. There are hourly train connections from Düsseldorf, Cologne and Eindhoven airports. We sail upstream on the Meuse to Maastricht.
After Maastricht we cross the border into Belgium, visit the cities of Liège, Huy and Namur with their impressive fortifications. Passing Namur, the valley of the Meuse become narrows, high rock faces rise up on the banks and we follow the Meuse through the Ardennes.
In Dinant, too, a fortress rises above the town.
At Givet we reach France. As we go further upstream, the Meuse is channeled in sections and bends in the river are cut off by short cuts or tunnels. That is why this part of the Meuse is also called Canal de la Meuse (‘Canal de l’Est’). The first leg of our journey ends in Verdun.
Verdun is known for the heavy fighting in and around the city during the First World War. The museum, now set up in the former casemates, is worth seeing with an interesting multimedia presentation.
Near Verdun is the Meuse - TGV train station, where the high-speed TGV trains from Paris, Strasbourg and Luxembourg stop. More information about navigating the Meuse can be found on the Website von Edward May, a connoisseur of French waterways.
I have sailed this waterway several times in recent years. accompanied with my wife Maria. The following videos are from these trips. Please visit her channel Maaswater15 and Waterways52 on YouTube.
